SIX STORIES

MATT WESOLOWSKI

THE BLURB

1997. Scarclaw Fell. The body of teenager Tom Jeffries is found at an outward bound centre. Verdict? Misadventure. But not everyone is convinced.

2017. Enter elusive investigative journalist Scott King, whose podcast examinations of complicated cases have rivalled the success of Serial, with his concealed identity making him a cult internet figure.

In a series of six interviews, King attempts to work out how the dynamics of a group of idle teenagers conspired with the sinister legends surrounding the fell to result in Jeffries’ mysterious death.

Six Stories is the first of a series of books by Matt Wesolowski. Book 5, Deity, has just been published. I read this book in just a few hours and immediately ordered the other 4 of the series. I was hooked from the start.

Everything about this book works. Wesolowski’s descriptive writing make the scenes easy to visualise and the story feel incredibly atmospheric. The smells and sounds are so easy to imagine that by closing your eyes you can almost put yourself there.

The characters are very real. Each with their own quirks, flaws and individualities. There is nothing implausible about them, the teenagers could easily have been lifted from any high school, and this is what makes the story so completely believable.

The writing style, in the form of interviews for a podcast, is clever, punchy and current. Wesolowski does dialogue with as much expertise as Cadburys does chocolate.

I am a sucker for a good crime story, it’s hard to find one I don’t enjoy, but it’s rare to come across something that feels a unique and relevant as this.

I very much look forward to the rest of the series.
